Understanding injuries in youth athletes

Learn how to recognise which sporty kids are at risk of injury and how to get them safely back to play.

We're on a mission to raise awareness about why sporty kids need a different approach to recovery after injury.

Kids have different anatomy and injuries from adults, and need an alternative approach to treatment by health professionals who have experience in being able to accurately diagnose and rehabilitate.

Meet the founder 👋

Founder Angela Jackson is a highly experienced Young Athlete Consultant Physiotherapist who has worked with active kids and junior athletes for over 35 years.

Angela built a highly successful private clinic in Cheshire, UK, based around treating sporty kids and their families. She was that young, sporty child and through lack of awareness and the right information, her sporting career was cut short. Angela is on a mission to raise the awareness of how sporty kids have different anatomy, pathologies, and need an alternative approach to help them recover after injury, to support them to reach their sporting potential, and stay active for life. She is a passionate educator and regularly shares her extensive knowledge and experience of working with youth athletes through online and in-person workshops, courses, and lecturing at conferences. Having a child with an injury can be a worrying time for both parents and children.

Kids are not mini adults! They sustain different injuries and require a different approach to treatment. However, this knowledge is rarely taught in the basic training of health professionals, so not all practitioners have the necessary skills to get your child safely back to sport. Kids Back 2 Sport is a specialist platform connecting parents, sports coaches, and young athletes with qualified physiotherapist practitioners who have experience treating children and adolescents with sports-related injuries. Our focus is on safe recovery, rehabilitation, and confident return to sport.

We promote evidence-based physiotherapy, age-appropriate rehabilitation, and a child-centred approach that considers physical, emotional, and developmental needs. Our practitioners focus not just on healing the injury, but on restoring confidence, movement quality, and long-term resilience.

Parents and coaches can use our Find a Practitioner tool to search for registered physiotherapists who are experienced in paediatric and adolescent sports injuries. All listed practitioners meet professional standards and understand the unique needs of young athletes.

Kids Back 2 Sport supports a wide range of children’s and adolescent sports injuries, including muscle strains, ligament injuries, growth-related conditions, overuse injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, and return-to-sport planning after time off due to injury.

Yes. Children and adolescents are still growing, which means injuries, rehabilitation, and loading must be managed differently. Paediatric sports physiotherapy takes into account growth plates, development stages, motivation in adolescents, and the psychological impact of injury.

Coaches play a vital role by encouraging open communication, avoiding pressure to return too early, and working collaboratively with parents and physiotherapists. Supporting gradual return to training and focusing on confidence and enjoyment is key to long-term athlete development.

Early assessment and treatment help prevent minor issues becoming long-term problems. Addressing movement patterns, strength, and load management early can reduce the risk of recurring injuries and support healthier participation in sport as children grow.

Yes. Kids Back 2 Sport provides physiotherapists with visibility to families actively seeking child-focused sports injury care. Our platform helps practitioners connect with parents and coaches who value specialist knowledge and evidence-based rehabilitation.

Our philosophy centres on enjoyment, confidence, and sustainable participation in sport. We encourage approaches that respect a child’s motivation, reduce burnout, and prioritise physical and mental wellbeing over short-term performance.

Absolutely. Kids Back 2 Sport supports children at all levels, from grassroots and school sport through to academy and elite pathways. Every child deserves access to appropriate care and guidance when recovering from injury.

Kids Back 2 Sport practitioners have the knowledge to assess and diagnose your child to help them get safely back to sport and play.

The practitioners on the Kids Back 2 Sport directory want to help share their knowledge with you and your child, so you can support them to stay injury free and become the best they can be.
